Careers working with the elderly

How do I get into Aged Care work?

helperHi there

I really enjoy working with the elderly, and wanted to find out about getting into Aged Care work. Where would I begin and what sort of career opportunities are there in this area?

Many thanks, J.K.

Hi J.K

It’s great to hear from you, as the Aged Care industry has many great employment prospects in future as there are not enough people trained in aged care to deal with Australia’s aging population.

To get started, I’d suggest a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course offered at registered training organisations such as TAFE, such as the Certificate III in Aged Care Work.

Regarding career pathways, Aged Care work offers lots of opportunity for further training and career progression. Check out the Career Pathways chart here to see where Aged Care work could take you. You could, for example, start off with a Certificate III as an Aged Care worker and end up with a Certificate IV in Service Coordination, managing an aged care facility or a Community Care Service.

The flyer A Real Taste of the Industry may also be of interest.

Best of luck pursuing your future community services and health career!
