A new National Trade Cadetships plan has been announced offering high school-based
Vocational Education and Training (VET) to students from years 9 to 12 under the National
Curriculum; and Industry Skills Councils will be asked to work with the Australian Curriculum
and Assessment Reporting Authority (ACARA), states and territories, to develop these.
"This is a role we are prepared to undertake," said Judy MacGraw, CEO of the Community
Service and Health Industry Skills Council.
The announcement was made by the Prime Minister with the Minister for Education,
Employment and Workplace Relations on Tuesday 20 July, and is dependent on the Gillard-
government returning to power.
According to the released statement, there are currently around 220,000 students
participating in Vocational Education and Training (VET) in schools, representing 41 per cent
of all school students undertaking a senior secondary certificate; and the new National Trade
Cadetship will aim at improving the connection to further post-school training and careers.
The National Trade Cadetship proposes two streams:
1. National Trade Cadetship - Foundation, which will focus on essential work readiness
skills and laying the foundation for further training.
2. National Trade Cadetship - Pre-Apprentice which will focus on a specific trade or
occupation area.
